Looking after your Earth Charms
Gold- and silver-plated jewellery is durable, but the finish is a surface layer — it wears in response to what it touches. Treated well, a plated piece keeps its colour for years. These six habits are the whole of it.
Store it airtight
Keep each piece in an air-tight jewellery box or a sealed pouch. Air and humidity are what dull a plated finish, so the less of both your jewellery sits in, the longer the finish lasts. Store pieces separately so chains don't scratch stones.
Keep it away from chemicals
Perfume, body lotion, hairspray, sunscreen and cleaning products all attack plating. The rule that works: jewellery goes on last, after you've dressed and finished your scent and skincare, and comes off first at the end of the day.
Wipe it after wearing
A gentle wipe with a soft, dry cloth after each wear lifts off skin oils and perspiration before they have time to sit. Never use abrasive cloths, toothpaste, or silver dip — they strip the layer you're trying to protect.
Keep it out of water
Do not immerse your jewellery. Chlorinated pool water and salt water are the harshest, but ordinary tap water left to dry on a plated surface will mark it too. If a piece does get wet, dry it fully with a soft cloth straight away.
Take it off to bathe or swim
Remove everything before bathing, showering or swimming. Soap builds a film that dulls the shine, and warm water opens the way for it. This one habit alone accounts for most of the difference between a piece that lasts and one that doesn't.
Take it off to sleep or train
Remove your jewellery before bed and before any physical activity. Sleeping in a chain bends links and loosens settings; gym equipment and sweat do the rest. A bedside dish beside your storage box makes the habit easy to keep.
